A Marantec safety edge (also called a closing edge safety device) is:
A pressure- or sensor-based safety system mounted on the leading edge of a door that detects contact with an obstacle and immediately stops or reverses movement.
It is one of the primary entrapment protection systems in industrial and commercial doors.
From Marantec:
- Safety edges are part of their “safety systems, sensors, and accessories” range used to prevent accidents in door operation
How it works (core principle)
When installed:
- Mounted on the bottom edge (closing edge) of the door
Operation:
- Door is closing
- If it touches an object/person:
- The edge compresses (mechanical) OR
- The internal sensor signal changes (optical/electrical)
- Signal is sent to the control panel
- Door:
- Stops immediately, or
- Reverses upward
This is contact-based protection, unlike photocells (non-contact)
Marantec Safety Edges
Optical Safety Edge (Optosensor type)
How it works:
- Uses an infrared light beam inside a rubber profile
- When the edge is compressed:
- The beam is interrupted
- Signal is sent to controller
Key features:
- No physical electrical contact (more reliable)
- Immune to wear compared to conductive types
- Often used with spiral cable or wireless transmission
Specs:
- Protection rating: IP68 (fully dust & water resistant)
- Temperature range: -20°C to +55°C
- Signal type: transmitter/receiver system inside edge
- Cable lengths: ~10 m TX / 1 m RX typical
Conductive Safety Edge (8k2 type)
How it works:
- Contains conductive rubber strips
- When compressed:
- Electrical resistance changes
- Controller detects activation
Key features:
- Simpler design
- Widely used in industrial applications
- Slightly more wear over time vs optical
Specs:
- Protection rating: IP65
- Operating temp: -10°C to +55°C
- Max length: up to 100 m
- Compliance: EN12978, TÜV certified
- Operating angle: up to 45°
Electrical & Control Integration
Safety edges connect to:
- Door control panel (e.g. CS series controllers)
- Safety circuit inputs
Typical behavior:
- Normally Closed (NC) safety circuit
- When triggered:
- Circuit opens → system enters safe state
Optional components:
- Evaluation relay panel (24V AC/DC systems)
- Wireless signal transmission (for moving doors)
Key Features (Marantec systems)
Contact-based entrapment protection
- Detects physical contact with obstacle
- Prevents crushing injuries
High environmental resistance
- IP65–IP68 ratings
- Works in:
- Dusty industrial environments
- Outdoor conditions
Flexible mounting
- Fits:
- Roller shutters
- Sectional doors
- Sliding gates
Long length capability
- Can cover entire door width (up to ~100 m)
Safety compliance
- Meets:
- EN12978 safety standard
- TÜV certification
System compatibility
- Works with:
- Photocells
- Light curtains
- Safety catch devices
Part of a multi-layer safety system
