ATEX Junction Box

The MFZ Ovitor EX-Klemmkasten Ex-e is an explosion-protected terminal/junction box designed for use in hazardous (Ex) environments.

It is built according to the “increased safety” protection concept (Ex-e) and is used to:

  • Safely distribute electrical connections
  • Interface field devices (limit switches, motors, sensors)
  • Integrate with industrial door control systems in hazardous zones

Typically used with:

  • MFZ Ovitor industrial door drives
  • Explosion-proof control panels
  • ATEX-compliant installations (e.g. chemical plants, grain silos)

Key Features

  • Certified for hazardous areas (gas & dust zones)
  • Ex-e (increased safety) design prevents sparks/arcs
  • Equipped with 6 cable glands (Verschraubungen)
  • Front-access enclosure (2017 front layout version)
  • Robust industrial housing (impact & corrosion resistant)
  • Suitable for integration with Ex-rated motor/control systems

Design & Construction

  • Flameproof integrity is not required (unlike Ex-d), but:
    • No arcs, sparks, or hot surfaces allowed
  • Internal terminal blocks are:
    • Securely fixed
    • Designed for vibration resistance
  • Cable glands:
    • Maintain sealing and explosion protection rating
  • Enclosure:
    • Often halogen-free, UV-resistant, and corrosion-resistant

Function in MFZ Ovitor Systems

Within an MFZ Ovitor installation, this Ex-e terminal box is typically used to:

  • Connect:
    • Motor power cables
    • Limit switches
    • Safety devices (edges, sensors)
  • Provide a safe interface between hazardous zone equipment and control units
  • Maintain compliance with ATEX/IECEx requirements

Safety & Compliance

  • Must comply with:
    • ATEX Directive (2014/34/EU)
    • IECEx certification schemes
  • Installation requirements:
    • By certified electricians only
    • Correct gland sealing is critical
  • Designed to prevent:
    • Electrical arcs
    • Excess heat buildup
    • Ignition of explosive atmospheres
